{"id":963,"date":"2013-03-24T14:21:40","date_gmt":"2013-03-24T14:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=963"},"modified":"2013-03-25T14:19:45","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T14:19:45","slug":"spreading-the-news-about-the-war-of-1812-in-annapolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/spreading-the-news-about-the-war-of-1812-in-annapolis\/","title":{"rendered":"Spreading the News About the War of 1812 In Annapolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For all the arresting folklore and history connected with the Chesapeake region, there is none more thrilling than the high drama that took place here 200 years ago as British raiding parties attacked lightly defended villages, the nation\u2019s capital, and Baltimore, during the War of 1812.\u00a0 During those days information was important to the citizens and the military, but news could only move as fast as someone could physically carry the message.\u00a0 So for a Maryland Day Talk I was down in Annapolis to discuss how news and information was spread when war came to Maryland\u2019s shores.\u00a0 We had a lively discussion and wrapped things up by contemplating how things have changed in the digital age, when news coverage is practically instantaneous. \u00a0\u00a0The program hosted locally by the City of Annapolis, the Historic District Commission, Annapolis Main Street, and the Capital Gazette was sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdhc.org\/files\/resources\/starspangledspeakersbureau-5.pdf\">Maryland Humanities Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-974\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-25-2013-10-03-59-AM.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-974\" alt=\"The Washingtonian is an example of a newspaper issued during the War of 1812.
