{"id":903,"date":"2013-02-22T21:55:37","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T21:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=903"},"modified":"2013-03-02T03:13:30","modified_gmt":"2013-03-02T03:13:30","slug":"preservation-success-story-150-year-old-jail-saved-in-princess-anne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/preservation-success-story-150-year-old-jail-saved-in-princess-anne\/","title":{"rendered":"Preservation Success Story:  150 Year Old Jail Saved in Princess Anne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The question of what <a href=\"http:\/\/cecilcounty.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/16\/while-debating-role-of-historic-districts-to-protecting-old-buildings-attempt-to-change-law-fails-in-vote-after-vote\/\">to do with an old, worn-out Maryland jail <\/a>comes up occasionally.\u00a0 When it does, there are some that say these aging structures, relics from an earlier era, are just in the way of progress and have no value.\u00a0 But others argue that those aging walls, survivors of centuries, add to the cultural fabric, enhancing the built environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If a decision is made to preserve the institution some sort of adaptive reuse is often called for as the strong structure is converted into offices, police stations, museums, shops, or hotels.\u00a0 But there have been some instances where\u00a0it is still used to detain wayward types, as an addition is attached to the original building.<\/p>\n<p>Down in Princess Anne this question was before the local governing and civic boards in 1999 as they grappled with whether a 150 year-old county hoosegow had any value in the modern age. \u00a0\u00a0Fortunately Somerset County and Princess Anne are places that value historic preservation and so after much deliberation it was decided that there was a value proposition for the community in preserving the old jail.<\/p>\n<p>In an acclaimed project that\u00a0received preservation awards, the \u201cGrey Eagle,\u201d a place that confined notorious types from 1857 to 1987, was preserved and today is the Princess Anne Police Department headquarters.\u00a0 Standing vacant for over a decade after a modern detention center was built, the Town of Princess Anne considered demolishing the building in 1999 because of \u201cits increasing decrepit state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the vocal preservation-oriented community saw economic development value in adaptive reuse however, so the political leadership restored the structure with the help of the Maryland Historical Trust and other stakeholders.
