This series delves into the history and experiences of Black athletes in the context of social justice and racial equality. Their interest was piqued by my 2013 research, which focused on the movement to segregate Route 40 in Cecil County and Delaware. In 1958, she won the National Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) high jumping championship and joined the United States Track &amp; Field Team. She then declined to compete with the U.S. Team in the Soviet Union despite the Cold War tensions. The athlete told <em>Jet Magazine<\/em>, &#8220;I don&#8217;t want anyone to think my athletics have political connotations. In other words, I don&#8217;t want to be used as a political pawn.&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"40927fe5-cfa7-4a51-84e0-227b9cc3c289\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"40927fe5-cfa7-4a51-84e0-227b9cc3c289-link\" href=\"#40927fe5-cfa7-4a51-84e0-227b9cc3c289\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This public refusal was significant as Black athletes, musicians, and other notable figures were often used by the State Department to counter the image &#8220;Jim Crow cast on America&#8221; around the globe, <a href=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/rose-robinson-wyomia-tyus-black-women-activism-sports\/\">Women&#8217;s Sports <\/a>writes.<sup data-fn=\"1f13d848-d62b-4413-8972-a693731c1953\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"1f13d848-d62b-4413-8972-a693731c1953-link\" href=\"#1f13d848-d62b-4413-8972-a693731c1953\">2<\/a><\/sup><sup>,<\/sup><sup data-fn=\"ea8cc467-ccd9-477e-b54f-e9a91ad71abd\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"ea8cc467-ccd9-477e-b54f-e9a91ad71abd-link\" href=\"#ea8cc467-ccd9-477e-b54f-e9a91ad71abd\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robinson&#8217;s activism with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) led her to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cecilcountyhistory.com\/at-height-of-cold-war-white-house-worries-about-route-40-as-freedom-riders-arrive\/\">Route 40 campaign <\/a>in September 1961. While traveling on the dual highway alongside fellow activist Wally and Juanita Nelson, they stopped at a diner in North East, MD. When the three Freedom Riders refused to leave the restaurant, the state police intervened and arrested them. Once booked into the Cecil County Jail, the \u201csit-downers\u201d staged a hunger strike and refused to cooperate with the court.<sup data-fn=\"ab0116a4-69d3-40d0-99b2-e9b673e8729e\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"ab0116a4-69d3-40d0-99b2-e9b673e8729e-link\" href=\"#ab0116a4-69d3-40d0-99b2-e9b673e8729e\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After fasting for several days, the sheriff sent Robinson and the Nelsons to Crownsville, the state psychiatric hospital for African Americans.
