{"id":57,"date":"2008-12-11T21:06:20","date_gmt":"2008-12-12T02:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mldixon.com\/historyblog\/?p=57"},"modified":"2008-12-11T21:06:20","modified_gmt":"2008-12-12T02:06:20","slug":"blogging-for-a-cause-subject-of-2009-preservation-maryland-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/blogging-for-a-cause-subject-of-2009-preservation-maryland-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogging for a Cause Subject of 2009 Preservation Maryland Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">I am pleased to learn that I have been selected to present &#8220;Blogging for a Cause&#8221; at\u00a0the 2009 Preservation Maryland Conference.\u00a0 This year\u00a0it takes place on May 28-29 in Baltimore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">The idea of offering workshops on blogging for a cause came about because the Town of Elkton attempted to allow a\u00a0big box retail store to develop 10-acres of\u00a0valuable historic land.\u00a0 Once the development threat was known, I got involved in an advocacy project to save the property.\u00a0\u00a0But I couldn\u2019t get print media to cover the story so\u00a0after trying for months, while watching the situation\u00a0deteriorate, I turned\u00a0to a practical alternative, a blog called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/someonenoticed.wordpress.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #9d5c00;\">Someone Noticed<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Almost overnight\u00a0I\u2019d become\u00a0a blogger with a cause.\u00a0 The weblog served its purpose by creating far more attention\u00a0on the proposal than I would\u00a0have ever have been able to\u00a0create in a newspaper.\u00a0 I\u2019m now happy to report that the property is no longer at risk since\u00a0the town has stopped persuing the development interest.<\/p>\n<p>Having gained experience with using the blogosphere for a purpose,\u00a0I decided to put together a workshop on my experience so others would understand how to leverage this new media for preservation advocacy.
