{"id":559,"date":"2012-02-11T23:52:07","date_gmt":"2012-02-12T04:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mldixon.com\/historyblog\/?p=559"},"modified":"2022-11-14T20:54:43","modified_gmt":"2022-11-15T01:54:43","slug":"project-scholar-for-new-study-asking-what-happens-when-big-government-moves-in-and-families-move-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/project-scholar-for-new-study-asking-what-happens-when-big-government-moves-in-and-families-move-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Scholar For New Study Asking What Happens When Big Government Moves In and Families Move Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mldixon.com\/historyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Photo3519.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-567\" title=\"Aberdeen Proving Ground Marker\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mldixon.com\/historyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Photo3519.jpg?resize=320%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>I have just started working on an exciting new investigation that is seeking to answer questions about the impact the military has on people and communities when it uproots long-established families to create a wartime reservation.\u00a0 This particular migration occurred in Harford County, Maryland, as the government established Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1917, six months after the United States entered World War I.\u00a0 To create the Proving Grounds, families occupying nearly 73,000 acres were forced to make a \u201cpatriotic sacrifice\u201d and move.\u00a0 They had no choice but to quickly relocate for the \u201cgood of their country,\u201d so hundreds were displaced, many with large farms that had been in their families for generations.<\/p>\n<p>As many of the displaced and their descendants still live in the area, two local partner organizations, Harford County Public Library and Hosanna School Museum will document their stories.\u00a0 Using \u201cyouth curators,\u201d the project will collect their oral histories, documents, and photographs, as we examine their reactions and efforts to make a new life work.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of this project, which is being underwritten by the Maryland Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institute is to work with \u201cyouth curators\u201d to help them create an exhibit that will tell this unexamined story.\u00a0 So soon, thanks to the stakeholders and \u201cthe youth curators,\u201d we\u2019ll have a better idea of what really happened when the big government moved in, and families moved out.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m serving as the project scholar.\u00a0 It\u2019s always exciting to investigate the changes that have come to our communities, and I\u2019m particularly looking forward to this youth-oriented project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have just started working on an exciting new investigation that is seeking to answer questions about the impact the military has on people and communities when it uproots long-established families to create a wartime reservation.\u00a0 This particular migration occurred in Harford County, Maryland, as the government established Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1917, six months&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6,12,13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-559","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community-studies","category-consulting-historian","category-oral-history"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Project Scholar For New Study Asking What Happens When Big Government Moves In and Families Move Out - Mike&#039;s History Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I use this blog as a place to share my experiences while practicing the history craft.
