Last Friday evening I was the keynote speaker for Phi Theta Kappa\u2019s Middle States Region Convention in Long Beach, NJ.\u00a0 Established in 1918, the Society recognizes and encourages academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Students must rank in the top 20 percent of their class to join.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mississippi headquartered organization puts \u201chonors in action\u201d by examining some intellectual subject of current interest during each convention.\u00a0 \u00a0This year, the Society\u00a0concentrated on the \u201cdemocratization of information: power, peril and promise.\u201d\u00a0 As the eager scholars kicked off their investigation of this subject, I introduced\u00a0the history of mass media\u00a0in a program called, \u201c This Just In:\u00a0 When Radio, Television and Mass Media Came of Age.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

There were about 200 energetic scholars inside the convention hall.\u00a0 They\u2019d traveled from throughout the Mid-Atlantic for the 24th convention and\u00a0they were eager to exchange ideas, views and opinions as they started their scholalry ivestigation of this\u00a0important 21st century issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
