{"id":23,"date":"2008-05-09T08:55:35","date_gmt":"2008-05-09T13:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mldixon.com\/historyblog\/?p=23"},"modified":"2008-05-09T08:55:35","modified_gmt":"2008-05-09T13:55:35","slug":"delaware-humanities-offers-new-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/delaware-humanities-offers-new-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Delaware Humanities Offers New Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For nearly a decade, I have provided some very popular lectures sponsored by the Delaware Humanities Forum and I have had rewarding experiences conducting these programs.\u00a0 Every few years the organization updates\u00a0it catalog and\u00a0I was informed yesterday that they are going to offer a few new\u00a0humanities topics that I have developed.\u00a0 The details will be up on their web site soon so\u00a0visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dhf.org\/\">www.dhf.org<\/a> and look under the speaker&#8217;s bureau for details.<\/p>\n<p>The programs are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mldixon.com\/programs\/duckandcover.html\"><em>Duck and Cover:\u00a0 Remembering the Days of Fallout Shelters, Conalrad, and Sputnik<\/em> <\/a>&#8212;\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 11pt; language: en-US\" lang=\"en-US\">This program examines Civil Defense from World War II to the time when planning for survival of an all out nuclear attack started fading into the past.\u00a0 Opening with an examination of World War II era blackout drills, plane spotter stations, and air raid wardens, the program quickly moves to the era where the stakes became higher, the nuclear age.\u00a0\u00a0 This was a time when air raid sirens wailed out signaling practice drills, Conalrad interrupted radio programs, government officials planned for the worst, and people contemplated building family fallout shelters .\u00a0 Vintage audio and video footage, such as Bert the Turtle telling schoolchildren to duck and cover, helps\u00a0 engage the audience in the program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mldixon.com\/programs\/masondixon.html\">The Mason Dixon Line:\u00a0 The Stories Behind a Geographic Boundary<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 &#8212; <span style=\"font-size: 11pt; language: en-US\" lang=\"en-US\">Born as the result of a bitter territorial dispute over royal land grants, the Mason-Dixon Line was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 to settle the boundaries for Pennsylvania and Maryland.\u00a0 After 1820, when the Missouri Compromise created political conditions which made the line important to the history of slavery, it became associated with the division between the free and slave states.\u00a0 Today the line is still seen by many as a symbolic dividing line for regional attitudes and <\/span><span style=\"language: en-US\" lang=\"en-US\">customs.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; language: en-US\" lang=\"en-US\">This program explores the story of the line, which runs through our land and our history, along with the perceptions that have developed about the boundary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>Oral History<\/em>\u00a0&#8212; This program shows audiences how to do effective oral histories and collect the memories of a lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For nearly a decade, I have provided some very popular lectures sponsored by the Delaware Humanities Forum and I have had rewarding experiences conducting these programs.\u00a0 Every few years the organization updates\u00a0it catalog and\u00a0I was informed yesterday that they are going to offer a few new\u00a0humanities topics that I have developed.\u00a0 The details will be&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,8],"tags":[150],"class_list":["post-23","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-delaware","category-programs","tag-programs"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Delaware Humanities Offers New Programs - Mike&#039;s History Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I use this blog as a place to share my experiences while practicing the history craft.
