{"id":2126,"date":"2019-09-29T22:26:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-30T03:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=2126"},"modified":"2023-04-30T21:16:48","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T02:16:48","slug":"segregation-at-harford-memorial-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/segregation-at-harford-memorial-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Ending Segregation at Harford Memorial Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Harford Community College is undertaking a project focused on increasing understanding of the Civil Rights Movement in Harford County. &nbsp;This three-year investigation funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), is designed to involve students as they do original research, complete interviews, analyze secondary sources, and develop scholarly narratives that provide a stronger understanding of the local Civil Rights Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHarford County grappled with issues of national importance as there was a drawn-out period of school desegregation\u201d during the 1950s and 1960s, according to the project plan.\u00a0 Freedom Riders targeted U.S. Route 40, prevailing Jim Crow Laws strengthened social norms, and Civil Rights were debated.\u00a0 \u201cThis project is designed to fill the gap in local knowledge of the era by having students directly engage in research, incorporating narratives of local civil rights history into the curriculum, engaging students in hands-on humanities-based learning activities, promoting broader public engagement in the humanities through the digital exhibition, mobile applications, and traditional learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of this multi-year NEH initiative, Willie Stamps visited the campus for a public talk and a student interview on September 26, 2019.\u00a0 Born in rural Mississippi in 1939, Mr. Stamps moved to Detroit as a teenager.\u00a0 In 1959 while attending mortuary school, he met his future wife, Patricia Taylor, who was also enrolled.  After they married, the newlyweds moved to Port Deposit, Patricia\u2019s hometown.\u00a0 She was pregnant and while he attempted to find work with a funeral home he took a job at Harford Memorial Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, tragedy struck as medical complications appeared.\u00a0 A hasty delivery was required, so Harford Memorial Admitted Patricia to the segregated ward.\u00a0 On arrival, <g class=\"gr_ gr_70 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"70\" data-gr-id=\"70\">Baby<\/g> Carlos was in acute distress.\u00a0 A modern, state-of-the-art incubator, a piece of medical equipment that provides an oxygen-enriched environment for newborns, was not available in this hospital ward.\u00a0 With the baby struggling to breathe, a white nurse soon grabbed the newborn, rushing to an upper floor to the white maternity ward where the special equipment was located.\u00a0 But it was too late as Baby Carlos passed away.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?fit=840%2C630\" alt=\"Patricia Stamps at Harford Memorial Hospital\" class=\"wp-image-2128\" width=\"338\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?resize=1200%2C900&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190926_164046.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A photo of Patricia Stamps on the wall at Harford Memorial Hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>George Thomas Stansbury, M.D. (1922 \u2013 1996), an African-American physician, practiced medicine in Havre de Grace.\u00a0 He spent the night with Patricia, doing what he could to save her, but she passed away on the same day, November 10, 1960.\u00a0 \u201cShe died of a broken heart,\u201d after hearing of the baby&#8217;s death, Mr. Stamps recalled.  \u201cI wanted to thank the nurse for taking a risk to help us, but I never did find out who she was,\u201d he told a group of over 100 people, including students, faculty, members of the community, and hospital management.((Obituary, Patricia Ann Taylor Stamps, <i>Havre de Grace Record,   Nov. 13, 1960<\/i>))<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While dealing with his grief, Mr. Stamps made an important decision.
