{"id":1998,"date":"2019-03-10T05:06:09","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T05:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=1998"},"modified":"2019-03-10T15:38:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T15:38:44","slug":"bladensburg-police-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/bladensburg-police-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Forgotten History:  Bladensburg Police Officer Fell in Line of Duty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In my practice as a historian, I\noccasionally find elusive traces in old\nrecords that indicate a first responder, a police officer or firefighter, died in\nthe line of duty, but the memory of the tragedy faded\nwith the passage of time.&nbsp; Somehow, the loss\nwas forgotten and their names were never added to memorials, although they made\nthe ultimate sacrifice for their community.&nbsp;\nWhen that happens, I\npick-up the fragments of evidence and trace the trail back through time, hoping\nto make sure the public servant\u2019s ultimate\nsacrifice is not forgotten in the mist of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While working on a talk, \u201cCSI The Historical Edition,\u201d a program many Maryland libraries paired with\nOne Maryland One Book, I scrutinized coroner\u2019s\ninquests and other usually unexamined criminal justice records from the early\n1900s. In the array of material I studied in the autumn of 2018 there were some\nfragmentary traces indicating that a Bladensburg Police Officer had suffered a\nfatal gunshot wound while coming to the assistance of a Prince George\u2019s County\nLawman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bladensburg-bailiff-84.jpg?resize=586%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bladensburg-bailiff-84.jpg?resize=586%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 586w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bladensburg-bailiff-84.jpg?resize=172%2C300&amp;ssl=1 172w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/bladensburg-bailiff-84.jpg?w=651&amp;ssl=1 651w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><figcaption>Bladensburg Bailiff Leebrick, a police officer, dies of his wound.  Source:  Washington Post, June 20, 1923<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the information I have at this point<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Constable Gasch was assigned to maintain order at a carnival in Bladensburg on Saturday, June 16, 1923.&nbsp; When a disturbance broke out, the Prince Georges County Officer arrested at least one man for disorderly conduct, and as he prepared to take his prisoner to jail a menacing crowd surrounded the lawman, threatening to free the man.&nbsp; As the ruckus escalated Bladensburg Bailiff James A. Leebrick came to the aid of the constable, pushing his way through the crowd to reach the officer&#8217;s side when he was shot above the heart. (Bailiff was the term for a municipal police officer.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bystanders rushed the stricken twenty-five-year-old Bladensburg policeman to Casualty Hospital, in Washington, D.C., where surgeons operated and provided transfusions.&nbsp; Lingering for three days, Bailiff Leebrick died on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m (June 19, 1923), according to the death certificate.&nbsp;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coroner\u2019s jury investigated the murder, determined that \u201cJames A.
