{"id":1688,"date":"2015-02-24T04:05:12","date_gmt":"2015-02-24T04:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=1688"},"modified":"2024-06-06T20:12:40","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T01:12:40","slug":"online-19th-century-directories-help-with-local-and-family-history-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/online-19th-century-directories-help-with-local-and-family-history-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Online 19th Century Directories Help With Local and Family History Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, a variety of directories were published.\u00a0 These include mercantile serials, city directories, state gazetteers, newspaper directories, and volumes for the professions, such as doctors and lawyers.\u00a0 These publications are valuable sources when doing local and family history research.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for researchers many of the older volumes are available from online, as library holdings are limited and scattered, except at some of the largest special collections institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Here are links to two volumes I was working with today.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=kBsSAAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=PA79&amp;lpg=PA79&amp;dq=ark+haven+maryland+cecil+county&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=xdlJNgWkSI&amp;sig=W52djM9IlRG3etm_jDNJRZCMu0g&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=0X_rVNXrG8a-ggSUmoOACg&amp;ved=0CE8Q6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q=ark%20haven%20maryland%20cecil%20county&amp;f=false\"> Thomson\u2019s Mercantile and Professional Directory 1851-52 <\/a>was a specialty publication, designed to help merchants reach a wider customer base.\u00a0 It informed a person\u00a0where they might \u201cobtain the goods he wants to the best advantage.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This is a quality scan of a volume in the University of Virginia Library.<\/p>\n<p>The other was the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=vhwlAAAAMAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=The+Maryland+Directory+and+State+Gazetteer,&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=VvDrVPDaO6bIsQTby4KQCA&amp;ved=0CCAQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=The%20Maryland%20Directory%20and%20State%20Gazetteer%2C&amp;f=false\">Delaware State Directory and Gazetteer for 1874-75<\/a>, compiled by Wm. H.
