{"id":1635,"date":"2014-12-23T03:16:15","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T03:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=1635"},"modified":"2024-03-27T18:48:34","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T23:48:34","slug":"remembering-a-bel-air-police-officer-who-died-94-years-ago-while-protecting-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/remembering-a-bel-air-police-officer-who-died-94-years-ago-while-protecting-the-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering a Bel Air Police Officer Who Died 94 Years Ago While Protecting the Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/noonan-2.jpg?resize=161%2C225\" alt=\"George Noonan\" width=\"161\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gettysburg Times, June 20, 1920, reports on the injured officer, George Noonan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Occasionally while researching some criminal justice history matter I find a hint in old records about a long forgotten, undocumented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/making-sure-fallen-officers-from-long-ago-are-not-forgotten-in-delaware-and-maryland\/\">fallen police officer<\/a>.\u00a0 When that happens, I pick up the evidentiary fragments\u00a0and trace the trail back through time to make sure the officer\u2019s ultimate sacrifice isn\u2019t forgotten in the mist of time.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades I have found officers in <a href=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/02\/wilmington-police-officer-slain-122-years-ago-remembered-in-service\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Wilmington,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/21\/clayton-officer-killed-in-the-line-of-duty\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Clayton<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/17\/three-fallen-crisfield-police-officers-added-to-memorial-during-national-police-week\/\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Crisfield<\/span><\/a> who fell in the line of duty, but were never listed on national, state, or local memorials or remembered in their community.\u00a0 When the tragic occurrence is pointed out and the facts around the incident have been gathered, an officer or retiree from the department usually picks it up from there, making sure the hero is honored and the sacrifice is remembered by the agency and the community.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago while working on an investigation,\u00a0I happened across some records about a Bel Air, MD police officer falling in the line of duty in 1920.\u00a0 So today I picked up those fading traces, doing some fieldwork in Harford County.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the narrative on this tragic occurrence:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3312\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3312\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/bel-air-093ar.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3312 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/delmarvahistory.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/bel-air-093ar.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C142\" alt=\"Bel Air Town Minutes from 1920\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bel Air Town Minutes for 1920. Source: Town of Bel Air<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A group of rowdies were making \u201clife miserable for Bel Air\u2019s quieter citizens by bombarding the town with torpedoes at all hours of the day and night\u201d in the summer of 1920, according to the Aegis.\u00a0 These wayward types had grown so daring as to toss firecrackers beneath the feet of ladies, causing them to stay clear of downtown streets.\u00a0 All week-long these \u201choodlums\u201d had been making life difficult &#8220;for the nervous and scaring horses by exploding the torpedoes as an advanced celebration of the Fourth of July,\u201d the Gettysburg Times remarked.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night\u00a0the racket in the business section was worse than ever so the town officer, Bailiff George Oliver Noonan, prepared to crackdown and bring a halt to the booming blasts of high-powered firecrackers.\u00a0 But\u00a0things reached a climax that weekend as he butted heads with the ruffians.<\/p>\n<p>The disruptive gang had purchased\u201c a generous supply of torpedoes,\u201d and were\u00a0 using them when the officer confronted the rowdies on June 26.\u00a0 When he warned them to stop igniting\u00a0firecrackers, someone lit the fuse on one and dashed it down at his feet.\u00a0 So he \u201cdivested some of the boys of their fireworks,\u201d placing the torpedoes in his pocket.\u00a0 \u00a0But at least one\u00a0of the revelers wasn&#8217;t\u00a0happy with that and so Bailiff Noonan arrested Billie Trundle.\u00a0\u00a0Trundle\u00a0resisted and in the scuffle, the officer was either &#8220;tripped or thrown heavily to the ground,&#8221; causing the torpedoes to explode with terrible force, the Midland Journal reported.<\/p>\n<p>His clothing was torn to shreds and the officer was seriously burned and bruised.\u00a0 He stumbled into Richardson\u2019s pharmacy where Dr. Charles Richardson determined that his injuries were serious.\u00a0 By Sunday he was failing, and a consulting physician, Dr. Charles Bagley, ordered immediate admission to the Church Home and Infirmary in Baltimore.\u00a0 In the hospital he steadily grew worse, until Monday night when death occurred (June 28, 1920).<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Noonan was 34 years of age and died &#8220;from injuries sustained while making an arrest.&#8221; newspapers reported.\u00a0\u00a0He was survived by a widow, formerly Miss Lulua Carr.\u00a0 Funeral services were held at his residence and interment was in the Quaker Cemetery at Broad Creek. He had been bailiff for several years and was regarded as an excellent and hardworking officer, the Gettysburg Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting of the Bel Air Town Council on June 30, 1920, the town took action to replace their loyal and dedicated officer, the minutes reading:\u00a0 \u201cMr. Paul H. Carroll was appointed bailiff to succeed Oliver Noonan, deceased.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0At the next meeting, Mr. Carroll declined the position and Samuel S.
