{"id":1544,"date":"2014-07-29T04:14:07","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T04:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=1544"},"modified":"2014-08-04T21:31:03","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T21:31:03","slug":"delaware-afro-american-historical-genealogical-society-effectively-focuses-on-its-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/delaware-afro-american-historical-genealogical-society-effectively-focuses-on-its-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Delaware Afro-American Historical &#038; Genealogical Society Effectively Focuses on its Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/delmarvahistory.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/african-american-black-cambridge-985.jpg?resize=243%2C322\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"322\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Postcard of an unidentified family, purchased from an antiques shop in Cambridge, MD.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Saturday I met a wonderful group, the Delaware Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (DEAAHGS).\u00a0 I was there for the <a href=\"www.dhf.org\">Delaware Humanities forum <\/a>to talk about \u201cExploring Family History through Genealogy,\u201d and we had a great program.\u00a0 Long after the formal discussion wrapped up, we were still at it, exchanging ideas and talking about family history in a lively give and take as everyone jumped in.<\/p>\n<p>What was most impressive for me, though, was to see the exceptional group that has come together to explore genealogy and local history, and\u00a0although it\u00a0is only two years old they have made great progress.\u00a0 In that span of time DEAAHGS has achieved a lot, serving as advocates for preserving the stories of family and community, gathering up historical and genealogical insights, all while helping members overcome roadblocks and get started.\u00a0 And they do it all in such an open and welcoming way.<\/p>\n<p>We all learned a lot as we exchanged ideas about research strategies, talked about additional how-to techniques for finding elusive evidence, and suggested seldom used primary sources.\u00a0 Then when President Jim Jones took the floor, he became the perfect booster for the organization\u2019s mission as he remarked in an especially effective, motivating way, \u201cif we don\u2019t do it, no one else will\u201d and \u201cget it done now before memories fade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This start-up Society has built up camaraderie by providing collegial support to \u00a0members,\u00a0guests, and public library patrons.\u00a0 Thank you President Jones, Vice-President of History Darleen Amobi, officers, and members for the invitation to speak, for the warm welcome, and for the chance to see your dedication.\u00a0 Also, thank you for sharing so much with your colleagues as they\u00a0document family stories.<\/p>\n<p>DEAAHGS has a large event scheduled in September and I will be keeping an eye on their monthly program schedule, as they are doing helpful work.\u00a0 You may want to do that too.\u00a0 You will find a friendly, open group just waiting to help the novice, as well as the experienced family history researcher.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday I met a wonderful group, the Delaware Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (DEAAHGS).\u00a0 I was there for the Delaware Humanities forum to talk about \u201cExploring Family History through Genealogy,\u201d and we had a great program.\u00a0 Long after the formal discussion wrapped up, we were still at it, exchanging ideas and talking about family history&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1544","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Delaware Afro-American Historical &amp; Genealogical Society Effectively Focuses on its Mission - Mike&#039;s History Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I use this blog as a place to share my experiences while practicing the history craft.
