{"id":1373,"date":"2014-02-05T02:22:49","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T02:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/?p=1373"},"modified":"2014-02-21T15:57:31","modified_gmt":"2014-02-21T15:57:31","slug":"more-online-maryland-newspapers-available-at-maryland-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/more-online-maryland-newspapers-available-at-maryland-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"More Online Maryland Newspapers Available at Maryland Archives."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a rapid pace these days, old newspapers are being digitized and made openly available to researchers, and as I work on projects I often find additional collections of these valuable publications.\u00a0 Some are completely digitized and fully text searchable, while on demand PDFs make up others.\u00a0 \u00a0Either way, as we undergo a revolution in research methods, the study of the past is strengthened as we make more\u00a0materials readily available\u00a0on our desktops.<\/p>\n<p>Previously work with these aging\u00a0newspapers and\u00a0the\u00a0technology from another era required lengthy visits to a library or special collections institution, along with hours of eye-straining labor as the microfilm slowly scrolled\u00a0along on a screen.<\/p>\n<p>The Maryland State Archives has had some PDFs of state newspapers online for a number of years.\u00a0\u00a0But\u00a0this evening I needed access to one of those limited runs, and discovered that the Archives has been busy\u00a0strengthening its virtual publications\u00a0resources, placing nearly 100 titles online.\u00a0 The serials are not text searchable, but the renderings are clear and easy to read and are great step forward in making a larger universe of data available to a\u00a0broader audience.\u00a0 Not all the years are online for the selected serials, but this appears to be a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, as it now stands it is a valued tool for genealogist and historians digging into the past in Maryland.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/speccol.mdarchives.state.md.us\/pages\/newspaper\/digitized.aspx\">Here is the link, so check it out.\u00a0 <\/a>Thank you Maryland State Archives.<\/p>\n<p>By-the-way, more 21<sup>st<\/sup> century resources are in the product development pipeline.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/dssumd.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/27\/an-introduction-to-the-historic-maryland-newspapers-project-and-the-pros-and-cons-of-digitizing-from-microfilm\/\">DigiStew,<\/a> the blog of digital systems at the University, discusses a project the University library is working on as part of the National Digital Newspaper Project.\u00a0 Through August 2014, the institution will digitize 100,000 pages of historical newspaper content from the state of Maryland.\u00a0 \u201cThe newspapers will be made freely accessible and searchable on the Library of Congress website, Chronicling America.\u00a0 Once\u00a0optical character recognition has been applied to papers, we greatly expand the efficiency of our research,\u00a0opening such access to much more data.<\/p>\n<p>Also here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/hornbakelibrary.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/04\/inaugural-post-of-the-historic-maryland-newspapers-project\/\">link to Special Collections <\/a>at the University, about the launch of project.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/delmarvahistory.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/02\/msa_sc3326_scm8231-0867.gif?resize=640%2C859\" width=\"640\" height=\"859\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chestertown Transcript of December 13, 1941 reports that Kent County is on full alert, following the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.
