Source: http:\/\/www.oldwilmington.net\/oldwilmington\/radio-tv.htm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are significant online resources to help scholars and the public locate and use video and audio recordings of broadcasts, and we are seeing some great advances in this area.\u00a0 One of those involves the <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/\">Internet Archive<\/a>, a source of web-based content since the late 1990s.\u00a0 Beginning with printed matter and websites, the aggregator and digitizer quickly added audio and moving images to the initial holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Now this virtual repository has taken another leap forward as it added <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/tv#\">television news from 20 different channels.<\/a>\u00a0 By collecting and preserving broadcasts, the Archive gives researchers easy access to network and local programs produced over the past 3 years.\u00a0 Twenty-four hours after an airing, the latest show is added to the files.\u00a0 But \u201cThe plan is to go back year by year, and slowly add news video going back to the start of television,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/18\/business\/media\/internet-archive-amasses-all-tv-news-since-2009.html?_r=0\">the New York Times report<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p>This collection was inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/tvnews.vanderbilt.edu\/\">by Vanderbilt University\u2019s Television News Archive<\/a>, an earlier project to preserve and provide access to the news broadcasts from the national television networks.\u00a0 Vanderbilt creates recording of news broadcasts and preserves the content for future generations while providing the widest access possible within the copyright limits.\u00a0 This repository has recordings back to August 5, 1968.\u00a0 Its core consist of regularly scheduled newscasts from ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>The Library of Congress is working to rescue shows shot on fragile videotape, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/rescuers-rush-to-preserve-tv-shows-shot-on-fragile-videotape\/2013\/07\/15\/ef6e2ee4-cd3c-11e2-8845-d970ccb04497_story.html\">Washington Post Reports<\/a>.\u00a0 At the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center technicians are converting old videotapes, from the 1950s through the 1970s, into digital files.\u00a0 The tapes with delicate coatings are in outdated formats, and programs were often erased as producers \u201cwere slow to realize that the initial records might have value in the distant future.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1198\" style=\"width: 945px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wdel-tv-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1198\" alt=\"wdel tv 1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wdel-tv-1.jpg?resize=640%2C494&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wdel-tv-1.jpg?w=945&amp;ssl=1 945w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wdel-tv-1.jpg?resize=300%2C231&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wdel-tv-1.jpg?resize=800%2C617&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A WDEL TV broadcast from Wilmington Delaware in 1950.
