on Research and Writing About History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the day the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gilpress\/2013\/04\/18\/todays-launch-of-the-digital-public-library-of-america\/\">Digital Public Library of America <\/a>opened its virtual doors to the public, I was in Havre de Grace to do a talk with author Heidi Glatfelter on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/2012\/04\/15\/searching-for-the-first-draft-of-history-overseeing-the-process-of-finding-lessons-about-the-war-of-1812-in-stacks-of-old-newspapers\/\">Researching and Writing about the War of 1812<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 We took a team approach to the program as I focused on new methods of doing digital research, while Heidi discussed how she accumulated information to produce her just released title, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Havre-Grace-War-1812-Chesapeake\/product-reviews\/1609496337\/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&amp;showViewpoints=1&amp;sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending\">\u201cHavre de Grace in the War of 1812:\u00a0 Fire on the Chesapeake.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/a>We both drew on our experience in working as consultants on the 1812 Bicentennial celebration that is taking place this spring in the beautiful community at the top of the Chesapeake.\u00a0 Heidi was the grant administrator and I served as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dixonhistory.com\/news\/2011\/04\/17\/helping-havre-de-grace-piece-together-forgotten-parts-of-its-history-for-war-of-1812-bicentennial\/\">consulting public historian.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Online research has made a broader universe of information easily available to anyone studying the past.\u00a0 So for this community-oriented audience I talked about some of the basic virtual repositories such as the <a href=\"archive.org\">Internet Archi<\/a>ve, the <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/ammem\/index.html\">American Memory <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/\">Chronicling America <\/a>collections at the Library of Congress, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/\">Project Gutenberg<\/a>.\u00a0 As old maps are of interest, we took some time to examine some of the portals for cartography such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldmapsonline.org\/#bbox=-76.181012,39.294475,-75.181256,39.694&amp;q=&amp;datefrom=1000&amp;dateto=2010\">Old Maps Online<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course, in the age when we all Google our information, we took a little deeper look at some of the tools in that massive index, such as Google scholar and newspaper archive. \u00a0\u00a0These were free resources, but we also talked about the commercial content providers.<\/p>\n<p>Once Heidi finished talking about how she accumulated her body of data and developed the narrative for the enjoyable and informative work, we turned to the audience for questions.\u00a0 They were interested in discussing how to use the online tools and other topics such as derivative digital copyrights.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a link to <a
